Stepping into a new gym can seem overwhelming, here at QuanWessels we pride ourselves in ensuring that all new students are welcomed and ushered through the step learning curve with professionalism and dedication to the learning process. In your trial week you will learn many things, however through experience we have curated our classes to give you a solid foundation of basics that will set you up for success in which martial arts you choose to pursue.
In your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trial classes, you’ll focus on mastering basic movements that are essential for advancing in BJJ. Techniques like shrimping, forward and backward rolls, technical get-ups, and s-mount get-ups will help build your foundation. You’ll also learn basic pin escapes and takedowns, while gaining crucial skills for self-defense, such as getting back up after being taken down, escaping pins, and successfully taking your opponent down.
In your Muay Thai and MMA trial classes, you’ll dive into the basics of striking, including how to throw effective punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. You’ll also learn essential MMA takedowns, basic defense techniques like blocking and slipping, and footwork and head movement to help you stay agile and controlled during a fight. These core skills will give you a strong start in both Muay Thai and MMA.

Frequently Asked Questions about 7-Day Free Trial
Yes, absolutely! The 7-day Free Trial is designed to give you full access to all of our classes, allowing you to explore and find the ones that best suit your preferences and schedule. The only exception is that adults are only permitted to try adult classes, and children can only participate in kids’ classes based on their age group.
While you are attending our 7 Day Free Trial classes, we will provide the Gi, rash guard, shorts, gloves and shin pads. All you need to do is arrive 10-15 minutes before class to collect the equipment from reception. You can also bring tights with you to wear underneath your gi and shorts.
After that you can purchase all the items of the QW uniform from us.
The truth is, you can’t know for sure right away, and that’s okay! That’s why we take things slow and steady—think “5 minutes at a time.” We make sure to check in with both their emotions and physical readiness as needed. Every child is different, so how quickly they pick things up varies. Our focus isn’t on jumping straight into intense training, but on helping them ease into the class at their own pace.
We make it easy for kids to find friends who are the same size, age, and enjoy the same activities, and our coaches are always there to offer support and build those friendships within the class. Coaches with a natural ability to calm and connect with kids bond quickly and help them feel comfortable. Once trust is built, they’re gently guided into the flow and structure of the class. We focus on maximum comfort and gradual growth—over time, as they become more comfortable, we slowly introduce more structure, and play naturally turns into training.
Starting something new can be challenging, but we give kids the time, care, and coaching they need to find their rhythm. They’ll settle in and find their place naturally!
Yes! Martial Arts is an excellent way to improve your fitness over time, regardless of where you are on the fitness scale.
Absolutely! Women can absolutely try out all of the classes during the trial. BJJ and Muay Thai are excellent martial arts for women, offering self-defence skills, boosting confidence, and fostering a sense of empowerment. The community is supportive and welcoming, with more women joining every day. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn techniques, build strength, and develop a resilient mindset.
Yes, here at QW we take uniform very seriously. We have both a BJJ uniform consisting of our QW white Gi, black rash guard and tights and then our Nogi uniform is our QW black rash guard, tights and grappling shorts. We require long rash guards and tights to be worn under your Gi as this not only keeps your muscle warm during training but also is more hygienic and protects your skin.
Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced with a traditional kimono-like uniform, while NoGi is practiced in athletic wear like rash guards and shorts. Gi provides a different set of grips and techniques, whereas NoGi focuses more on body movement and speed.
Yes, absolutely! While Muay Thai and MMA involve a variety of striking techniques, you will definitely learn key boxing fundamentals in both classes. In Muay Thai, you’ll master essential punches, including jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts, which are integral to both Muay Thai and MMA. Additionally, our MMA classes incorporate boxing techniques alongside other disciplines, helping you develop strong striking skills for both stand-up and cage work. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, our classes will teach you the core principles of boxing and how to apply them in real-world scenarios.
Learning and progression is a subjective experience, ultimately the more you put in the quicker you will learn the skill. At QW we have fostered an environment to fast track your learning progress; a carefully constructed and layered curriculum and additional tools such as the QuanWessels Infinity App.However the onus is still on the student to put in the work by showing up and participating.
