Ladies-Only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes in Sunninghill

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that specialises in ground fighting and submission techniques, emphasising leverage and technique over raw strength. This makes it an ideal choice for women, as it allows practitioners to defend themselves effectively regardless of size or strength. At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, we offer Gi-only classes specifically tailored for women, providing a supportive and empowering environment to learn self-defence and build confidence. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely regarded as one of the best martial arts for self-defence, as it equips you with the skills to control and subdue an opponent, even if they are larger or stronger than you.

Whether you’re new to martial arts or looking to refine your skills, BJJ will help you enhance your fitness, mental resilience, and self-assurance in any situation.

QW Ladies-ONLY BJJ Class Curriculum

At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, our Ladies-Only BJJ classes are structured to accommodate all skill levels, with students progressing within the same class setting. Beginners start their journey by going through OnRamp BJJ core movements of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, such as hip escapes, shoulder rolls, and breakfalls, alongside essential grappling techniques. These fundamental skills are critical to your progression and are seamlessly integrated into the class, ensuring you develop a strong foundation for your BJJ journey. Alongside these movements, you’ll also practice basic takedowns, pin escapes, and an introduction to the underhook series, all while getting a great calisthenics workout to strengthen your body.

As you continue to practice and refine these techniques, you will gradually progress to more advanced concepts, like underhooks, overhooks, takedowns, guard passing, and back takes, all within the same class structure. To support your learning, each lesson is also available on the QuanWessels Infinity App, allowing you to revisit and recap what has been taught. This ongoing, progressive learning environment ensures that you continually challenge yourself while receiving instruction tailored to your skill level throughout your entire journey.

Frequently Asked Questions about Our Ladies-Only Jiu-Jitsu Classes

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced with a traditional kimono-like uniform, while NoGi is practiced in athletic wear like rash guards and shorts. Gi provides a different set of grips and techniques, whereas NoGi focuses more on body movement and speed.

Yes, here at QW we take uniform very seriously. We have both a BJJ uniform consisting of our QW white Gi, black rash guard and tights and then our Nogi uniform is our QW black rash guard, tights and grappling shorts. We require long rash guards and tights to be worn under your Gi as this not only keeps your muscle warm during training but also is more hygienic and protects your skin.

While you are  attending our 7 Day Free Trial classes, we will provide the Gi, rash guard, shorts, gloves and shin pads. All you need to do is arrive 10-15 minutes before class to collect the equipment from reception. You can also bring tights with you to wear underneath your gi and shorts.

After that you can purchase all the items of the QW uniform from us.

Yes! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for all fitness levels. We offer beginner-friendly classes that focus on building strength, flexibility, and technique. BJJ is an excellent way to improve your fitness over time, regardless of where you’re starting.

Learning and progression is a subjective experience, ultimately the more you put in the quicker you will learn the skill. At QW we have fostered an environment to fast track your learning progress; a carefully constructed and layered curriculum and additional tools such as the QuanWessels Infinity App.However the onus is still on the student to put in the work by showing up and participating.

Definitely! Learning BJJ alongside striking or MMA won’t hold back your progress—in fact, it can help speed it up. Each style complements the other, and you’ll likely see faster growth by training in multiple areas. Ultimately, we want our students to become well-rounded martial artists, not just specialists in one style.

BJJ progression is based on skill and knowledge rather than age or time spent training. It must be mentioned that every Jiu-Jitsu academy has their own grading culture and rituals, however all schools follow the same order of progression (White to Black) with four stripes on each white to brown belt. BJJ Belt Progression (White to Brown):

  1. White Belt: Beginner level, learning basics.
  2. Blue Belt: Intermediate, gaining solid understanding and techniques.
  3. Purple Belt: Advanced, with a deeper mastery of techniques and strategy.
  4. Brown Belt: High level of proficiency, refining techniques and preparing for black belt.

Once you earn your black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the stripe progression continues, but it follows a slightly different system than the lower belt ranks. After the black belt, there are multiple degrees or stripes that you earn over time, signalling your continued growth and expertise in the art.

Yes, adhering to these washing instructions you will get the longest wear out of your gear. Gi’s and belt are 100% cotton so should ALWAYS be washed on a cold wash and don’t use fabric softener (tip: add some bicarb soda into the machine and use white vinegar as ‘softener’ this helps eliminate odours). Nogi gear should also be washed in 40℃ water and no hotter as it can damage the material. Lastly, NEVER put your Gi and Nogi gear in the tumble dryer.
