Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Adult Classes in Sunninghill Johannesburg
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Jiu-Jitsu) is a martial art focused on ground fighting and submission techniques. It’s known for its focus on leverage and technique rather than brute strength, making it suitable for practitioners of all sizes and ages. At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, we offer both Gi and NoGi classes, catering to a variety of interests and skill levels. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced practitioner, Jiu-Jitsu offers numerous physical and mental benefits, including improved fitness, self-discipline, and confidence.
QuanWessels BJJ Class Curriculum
At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, our adult BJJ classes are designed to accommodate all skill levels. Beginners start their journey in the Onramp BJJ Class. In this class, you will learn all the basic movements for BJJ and the other grappling sports; from hip escapes to shoulder rolls and breakfalls. This is a necessary beginning as all these movements will be paramount to your learning journey as you rise through the ranks. All the standard movement drills you will learn, also double as an excellent calisthenics workout to help strengthen your body. You will also learn some basic takedowns, pin escapes and be introduced to our underhook series. All of these lessons are also available on the QuanWessels Infinity App to help you learn and recap what has been taught.
Once you have become proficient in all the concepts and techniques on the Onramp card; you will be ready to venture to your next class; ONRAMP TO FUNDAMENTALS where you will learn the first 5 fundamentals; Underhooks, Overhooks, Takedowns, Guard Passing & Back Takes and Retention.
Upon successfully completing the Fundamentals curriculum, students are ready to join the General Class, where they train alongside practitioners of all levels. The General Class is split into two main groups: the white belts in one group and the coloured belts in the other. This again ensures that students receive tailored instruction based on their skill level.

Frequently Asked Questions about Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes
Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced with a traditional kimono-like uniform, while NoGi is practiced in athletic wear like rash guards, tights and shorts. Gi provides a different set of grips and techniques, whereas NoGi focuses more on body movement and speed.
Yes, here at QW we take uniform very seriously. We have both a BJJ uniform consisting of our QW white Gi, black rash guard and tights and then our Nogi uniform is our QW black rash guard, tights and grappling shorts. We require long rash guards and tights to be worn under your Gi as this not only keeps your muscle warm during training but also is more hygienic and protects your skin.
If you are attending our 7 Day Free Trial classes, during that time we provide you with a Gi, belt and rash guard. After that you can purchase all the items of the QW uniform from us.
Absolutely! Women can definitely train BJJ, and many do. In fact, BJJ is a great martial art for women, offering self-defence skills, confidence, and a sense of empowerment. There are women of all skill levels in BJJ, from beginners to black belts, and female athletes are making huge strides in the sport. The community is welcoming, and more women are getting involved every day. It’s all about learning the techniques, building strength, and developing a resilient mindset.
Yes! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for all fitness levels. We offer beginner-friendly classes that focus on building strength, flexibility, and technique. BJJ is an excellent way to improve your fitness over time, regardless of where you’re starting.
Learning and progression is a subjective experience, ultimately the more you put in the quicker you will learn the skill. At QW we have fostered an environment to fast-track your learning through a carefully constructed and layered curriculum and additional tools such as the QuanWessels Infinity App. However the onus is still on the student to put in the work by showing up and participating.
Definitely! Learning BJJ alongside striking or MMA won’t hold back your progress—in fact, it can help speed it up. Each style complements the other, and you’ll likely see faster growth by training in multiple areas. Ultimately, we want our students to become well-rounded martial artists, not just specialists in one style.

BJJ progression is based on skill and knowledge rather than age or time spent training. It must be mentioned that every Jiu-Jitsu academy has their own grading culture and rituals, however all schools follow the same order of progression (White to Black) with four stripes on each white to brown belt. BJJ Belt Progression (White to Brown):
- White Belt: Beginner level, learning basics.
- Blue Belt: Intermediate, gaining solid understanding and techniques.
- Purple Belt: Advanced, with a deeper mastery of techniques and strategy.
- Brown Belt: High level of proficiency, refining techniques and preparing for black belt.
Once you earn your black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the stripe progression continues, but it follows a slightly different system than the lower belt ranks. After the black belt, there are multiple degrees or stripes that you earn over time, signalling your continued growth and expertise in the art.
Yes, adhering to these washing instructions you will get the longest wear out of your gear. Gi’s and belt are 100% cotton so should ALWAYS be washed on a cold wash and don’t use fabric softener (tip: add some bicarb soda into the machine and use white vinegar as ‘softener’ this helps eliminate odours). Nogi gear should also be washed in 40℃ water and no hotter as it can damage the material. Lastly, NEVER put your Gi and Nogi gear in the tumble dryer.
