BJJ helps kids build confidence, learn self-discipline, and improve their strength and fitness while developing important life skills like respect, focus, and teamwork. Whether they are beginners or have some experience, BJJ is a great way for kids to stay active, challenge themselves, and grow both physically and mentally.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) for kids combines different martial arts disciplines, including Muay Thai, Striking, Judo and wrestling, to create a fun and dynamic training experience. It focuses on building strength, agility, coordination, and self-confidence, all while teaching kids important values like respect, discipline, and teamwork. At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, our MMA classes for kids are designed to be safe, engaging, and educational. Whether they’re just starting out or have some experience, kids will learn how to defend themselves, improve their fitness, and develop mental toughness, all in a supportive and structured environment.
All age groups follow a structured curriculum that begins with OnRamp elements and progresses through the Fundamentals of BJJ and MMA. These classes are specifically designed to suit each child’s age, physical abilities, and mental development. The focus on these foundational movements helps children improve both gross and fine motor skills, which are crucial for building strong, healthy bodies as they grow. The curriculum ensures that kids learn at their own pace while developing coordination, strength, and confidence in a supportive environment.

White Belt: Beginners focus on learning the fundamental positions and basic techniques, including guard, mount, side control, and escapes. They develop an understanding of basic Jiu-Jitsu concepts like balance, control, and positioning.
- Grey Belt: At this level, kids begin refining their basic movements. They gain more control over positions and start applying submissions and escapes with more precision. Focus is on improving technique and understanding the flow of Jiu-Jitsu. [Grey-White, Grey, Grey-Black]
- Yellow Belt: Children become more comfortable in a variety of positions, learning more advanced submissions and sweeps. They also work on developing timing and control, with a stronger emphasis on sparring and applying techniques during live rolls. [Yellow-White, Yellow, Yellow-Black]

Yes, adhering to these washing instructions you will get the longest wear out of your gear. Gi’s and belt are 100% cotton so should ALWAYS be washed on a cold wash and don’t use fabric softener (tip: add some bicarb soda into the machine and use white vinegar as ‘softener’ this helps eliminate odours). Nogi/MMA gear should also be washed in 40℃ water no hotter as it can damage the material.
Avoid putting your wet white Gi in direct sunlight as this will turn it a yellowish colour.
Lastly, NEVER put your Gi and Nogi gear in the tumble dryer.
We are in the heart of Sunninghill, inside the Moove Motion Fitness Club at 1 Kikuyu Road. Some might say we are quite a distance but below is a handy map outlining all the areas that are within a 30 minute drive to us.

Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Related Questions
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Jiu-Jitsu) is a martial art focused on ground fighting and submission techniques. It’s known for its focus on leverage and technique rather than brute strength, making it suitable for practitioners of all sizes and ages. At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, we offer both Gi and NoGi classes, catering to a variety of interests and skill levels. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced practitioner, Jiu-Jitsu offers numerous physical and mental benefits, including improved fitness, self-discipline, and confidence.
Is there a difference between Gi and Nogi? Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced with a traditional kimono-like uniform, while NoGi is practiced in athletic wear like rash guards and shorts. Gi provides a different set of grips and techniques, whereas NoGi focuses more on body movement and speed.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a dynamic combat sport that combines techniques from various martial arts disciplines, including striking, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai. MMA uses a combination of punches, kicks, takedowns, submissions, and ground control to outmanoeuvre their opponents in the cage. Known for its versatility and intensity, MMA challenges athletes both physically and mentally, making it an exciting sport for competitors and fans alike. Whether you’re looking to get fit, improve your self-defence skills, or compete, MMA offers a comprehensive approach to martial arts training.
Muay Thai, often called the “Art of Eight Limbs,” is a powerful striking martial art from Thailand that uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins for both long-range and close-range attacks. While it goes beyond traditional boxing with its use of various strikes, the sport still incorporates key boxing elements like punches—jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts—blending them with devastating knee strikes and clinch work. Muay Thai is known for its intensity and effectiveness, making it a popular choice for those looking to improve fitness, develop strength, and learn self-defence. Muay Thai provides a comprehensive and challenging workout that engages both the body and mind.
BJJ progression is based on skill and knowledge rather than age or time spent training. It must be mentioned that every Jiu-Jitsu academy has their own grading culture and rituals, however all schools follow the same order of progression (White to Black) with four stripes on each white to brown belt. BJJ Belt Progression (White to Brown):
- White Belt: Beginner level, learning basics.
- Blue Belt: Intermediate, gaining solid understanding and techniques.
- Purple Belt: Advanced, with a deeper mastery of techniques and strategy.
- Brown Belt: High level of proficiency, refining techniques and preparing for black belt.
Once you earn your black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the stripe progression continues, but it follows a slightly different system than the lower belt ranks. After the black belt, there are multiple degrees or stripes that you earn over time, signalling your continued growth and expertise in the art.
Yes! Martial Arts is an excellent way to improve your fitness over time, regardless of where you are on the fitness scale.
Definitely! Learning BJJ alongside striking or MMA won’t hold back your progress—in fact, it can help speed it up. Each style complements the other, and you’ll likely see faster growth by training in multiple areas. Ultimately, we want our students to become well-rounded martial artists, not just specialists in one style.
