What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting and submission techniques. It’s all about using technique and leverage, not just strength, so it’s perfect for kids of all sizes and abilities.
At QuanWessels Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy, we offer both Gi and NoGi classes that are designed to be fun, engaging, and educational. BJJ helps kids build confidence, learn self-discipline, and improve their fitness while developing important life skills like respect, focus, and teamwork.
Whether they are beginners or have some experience, BJJ is a great way for kids to stay active, challenge themselves, and grow both physically and mentally.
What is Mixed Martial Arts for Kids
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) for kids combines different martial arts disciplines, including Muay Thai, Striking, Judo and wrestling, to create a fun and dynamic training experience. It focuses on building strength, agility, coordination, and self-confidence, all while teaching kids important values like respect, discipline, and teamwork.

These classes are specifically designed to suit each child’s age, physical abilities, and mental development. The focus on these foundational movements helps children improve both gross and fine motor skills, which are crucial for building strong, healthy bodies as they grow. Frequently Asked Questions about Our Kids Classes
The truth is, you can’t know for sure right away, and that’s okay! That’s why we take things slow and steady—think “5 minutes at a time.” We make sure to check in with both their emotions and physical readiness as needed. Every child is different, so how quickly they pick things up varies. Our focus isn’t on jumping straight into intense training, but on helping them ease into the class at their own pace.
We make it easy for kids to find friends who are the same size, age, and enjoy the same activities, and our coaches are always there to offer support and build those friendships within the class. Coaches with a natural ability to calm and connect with kids bond quickly and help them feel comfortable. Once trust is built, they’re gently guided into the flow and structure of the class. We focus on maximum comfort and gradual growth—over time, as they become more comfortable, we slowly introduce more structure, and play naturally turns into training.
Starting something new can be challenging, but we give kids the time, care, and coaching they need to find their rhythm. They’ll settle in and find their place naturally!
Yes, at QuanWessels we take our uniform requirements seriously to ensure both safety and hygiene. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes, kids wear our QW white Gi along with a black rash guard and tights underneath. For No-Gi classes, the uniform consists of a QW black rash guard, tights, and grappling shorts. Wearing long rash guards and tights under the Gi helps keep muscles warm during training, promotes hygiene, and protects the skin. It’s important that your child wears the full uniform to maintain consistency and safety during class.
If your child is attending our 7 Day Free Trial classes, during that time we provide them with a Gi, belt and rash guard, as well as the gloves and shin pads they will need for the MMA classes. After that you can purchase all the items of the QW uniform from us.
Just like any other sport, there are recommended training clothes and equipment needed to ensure that a person can properly and safely participate in that sport. The same goes for BJJ and MMA, even when they are little. Another aspect of uniform culture is that it creates an even playing field among the kids, there is no unnecessary comparison and everyone is part of the same team. The cost outlay can seem off-putting, however we do offer payment options for purchasing full sets.
At QuanWessels BJJ & MMA Academy, we foster a competitive spirit, but there is absolutely no pressure for your child to compete. While competition can be a great motivator for growth and progress, it’s not a requirement. For those who do choose to compete, it’s an opportunity to refine and perfect their techniques in a real-world setting. These experiences help us improve our systems and coaching, which in turn benefits all students by providing them with expertly coached techniques and structured programs. Whether your child competes or not, they will still receive the highest quality training and support in their martial arts journey.

As an academy affiliated with IBJJF, we follow the IBJJF belt colours for kids. We also use attendance cards which mark each class they attend as well as our OnRamp cards which track all the different techniques and systems they are expected to learn.
Firstly, they should not be allowed to play outside and off the mat in their Gi (it is white…). And teach them that this is their uniform which is to be only worn when training. Yes, adhering to these washing instructions you will get the longest wear out of their gear. Gi’s and belt are 100% cotton so should ALWAYS be washed on a cold wash and don’t use fabric softener (tip: add some bicarb soda into the machine and use white vinegar as ‘softener’ this helps eliminate odours). Nogi gear should also be washed in 40℃ water and no hotter as it can damage the material. Lastly, NEVER put the Gi and Nogi gear in the tumble dryer.
Martial arts isn’t just about self-defence; it’s about self-growth and helping kids become the best version of themselves.
