QuanWessels launches The Sunninghill Gauntlet, an annual 8-athlete Gi BJJ tournament with a R5,000 winner-takes-all prize. Enter the ballot now.
Every so often, you get to build something you wish had existed when you started competing. This is that.
We’re proud to launch The Sunninghill Gauntlet, a brand new annual event that runs alongside the Sunninghill Opens. It’s a simple idea: eight of the best adult male blue and purple belts in the under-80kg division, one bracket, and R5,000 cash for the winner.
What is the Gauntlet?
The Gauntlet is an 8-man Gi BJJ tournament, run under the IBJJF ruleset. Eight competitors go in. To win, you get through every one of the matches in front of you. There is no second-place prize and no splitting the pot. The winner takes home R5,000.
Who can enter?
For our first edition, the Gauntlet is open to blue and purple belts men under 80kg. In our gym we call this the Impala squad: fast, sharp and hard to catch. Fighters over 80kg are the BIG 5, and their turn is coming.
Why a ballot?
We expect far more than eight people to want a spot. So instead of first come, first served, every entry goes into a ballot, and eight competitors are selected. Here’s how it works:
- Enter through the Sunninghill Gi Open registration page.
- Your entry goes into the ballot.
- Eight fighters are drawn and confirmed for the bracket.
What does it cost?
Entry is the same as the regular Sunninghill Gi Open fee:
- Early Bird: R200 (ends Monday 5 October)
- Regular: R300 (from 6 October)
- Late: R400 (from 19 October)
The earlier you enter, the less you pay. Enter early.
When and where?
The Gauntlet runs during the Sunninghill Gi Open on Saturday 24 October at QuanWessels. This is our final Sunninghill Open of the year, and we want it to be our biggest yet.
This is only edition one
The Gauntlet is an annual event, and it will grow. Future editions will feature different brackets across weight classes, genders, and belt levels. If you don’t fit this year’s criteria, there’s a good chance you’ll fit next year’s. Keep training.
